2X2 Features Topdog/Underdog and Red Light Winter in repertory January 31 through March 2
(Cincinnati, OH) – Know Theatre of Cincinnati is pleased to present 2X2: Topdog/Underdog and Red Light Winter, plays by two of America’s best modern playwrights in repertory .
Topdog/Underdog tells the story of two brothers, Lincoln and Booth, who, abandoned by their parents, have had to depend upon each other for survival since they were teenagers. Now in their 30s, the brothers struggle to make a new life, one that will lead them out of poverty. Lincoln, a master of the con game three-card monte, has abandoned a life of crime for a more respectable job impersonating Abraham Lincoln at an arcade. Booth, on the other hand, earns his living as a petty thief, one who wishes to emulate his older brother’s success by learning how to “throw the cards.”
Throughout the play, the brothers compete against each other, vying for control. At any given moment, one may wield power over the other, only to relinquish it in the next. Hence, Topdog/Underdog reveals a topsy-turvy world in which Lincoln and Booth live, a chaotic world that is as dangerous as it is illusory.
Topdog/Underdog premiered at the Public Theatre/New York Shakespeare Festival on July 26, 2001, with Jeffrey Wright as Lincoln and Don Cheadle as Booth. Its transfer to Broadway in April of 2002 featured Wright reprising his role and legendary hip hop artist Mos Def in the role of Booth.
Topdog/Underdog will be directed by CCM’s Richard Hess and will, once again, feature Todd Patterson and Derek Snow as brothers on the Know stage. Audiences will remember Todd and Derek as brothers from Know’s October big hit, The Pillowman.
Adam Rapp’s Red Light Winter joins Topdog/Underdog in repertory as part of 2X2. In Rapp's Red Light Winter, there is a thin line between love and sexual obsession in Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Two college friends, one using life to the fullest, the other on the verge of suicide, find their lives irreversibly altered through the love of a troubled young woman, who is more than what she seems. Drugs, disillusionment and deception keep them from any true connection, but when you have nothing, any fantasy will do.
Red Light Winter will mark Associate Artistic Director Eric Vosmeier’s main stage directorial debut. Resident actors Anne Marie Carroll and Vandit Bhatt will join Cincinnati favorite Anthony Darnell in the cast.
2X2 will play January 31 to March 2 at Know Theatre of Cincinnati 1120 Jackson Street. Performances are Thursday thru Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. Tickets are available through 513.621.ARTS (2787) or online at www.knowtheatre.com.
