In the fall of 1997, Jay B. Kalagayan brought seven young actors to perform in a local bookstore, their costumes and props held in a single trunk and that summer they formed The Know Theatre Tribe. In 2004, Know Theatre hired Artistic Director Jason Bruffy, founder of the Cincinnati Fringe Festival and former company manager of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. His leadership enabled immense growth in Know Theatre’s artistry and prominence, culminating in 2006 when Know Theatre took up residence in our first permanent home and merged with the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. Renaming ourselves Know Theatre of Cincinnati in salute of the city that supports us and that our nomadic “tribe” days are in the past. In January of 2009, Jason Bruffy was named Person of the Year by CityBeat for persevering in the face of the economic downturn and bringing soul to the ongoing redevelopment efforts in the Gateway Quarter in Over-the-Rhine. In the summer of 2009, both Jay Kalagayan and Jason Bruffy departed Know Theatre of Cincinnati. Thanks to the foundations that these leasders have built, Know Theatre will continue to grow and is now beginning its 12th Season creating art in Over-the-Rhine.
Our new theatre in Over-the-Rhine, Downtown Cincinnati solidifies Know Theatre as the home of contemporary,
